Native Americans use sage smudge to purify the mind, body
and spirit before praying, purifying the atmosphere and dispersing negativity.
Some may use it to purify their homes, offices and cars. Carry small amounts of
sage in a pocket or medicine pouch to insure personal and spiritual safety.
This herb is considered “sacred” by the Native Americans who have used the
wands or loose herbs for generations in the “smudging” ceremonies. The smell of
sage will remind you of the desert and the sacredness of life. Smudging puts
out a lot of soothing smoke. Very refreshing, relaxing and clearing.
Smudging has long been used to connect to the spiritual
realm or enhance intuition. For healers and laypeople in traditional cultures,
burning sage is used to achieve a healing state — or to solve or reflect upon
spiritual dilemmas.
Smudging may also be used as a ritual tool to rid yourself
— or your space — of negativity. This includes past traumas, bad experiences,
or negative energies from others. It can also be used to cleanse objects – for
example after purchasing pre-loved goods.
As smudging is classed as a sacred ritual, before you begin
you can set the intention that the process clears (the object, space, person
etc), cleansed and releases negativity. Always have windows open during
smudging so the smoke can clear.
To use a smudge stick:
Light the end of the bundle and also it to burn a little
before blowing out the flame. The end of the bundle should be smouldering
nicely. Whether you are cleansing yourself, your home or an object, the process
is the same. Direct the smoke to the object and allow it to linger for a while.
If cleansing a room, walk slowly around the room (some say in a clockwise
direction), concentrating on corners, under and behind furniture etc. until you
feel satisfied that you have completed the ritual – just trust your intuition.
You can also place the sage stick in a fire proof bowl and
allow to smoulder, wafting throughout the house/space.
Always ensure you have extinguished your stick completely.
This is generally done by rubbing the end in a bowl of sand (I personally take
it outdoors and extinguish it on the ground/earth).
Store your sage stick in a dry place out of direct
sunlight.
