Kaisa Flat Baskets - Set Of 2

Flat table baskets with lids!  Gather your bits and pieces and put them inside - great simple on-table storage with a bit of fabric flair. These fab baskets are handmade from Kaisa grass, are Fair Trade and feature recycled sari fabric detail.

The large basket measures 40cm in diameter and 20cm high.

The small basket measures 30cm in diameter and 15cm high.

Kaisa is a wild grass that is used in Bangladeshi basket-making. These baskets also use sarees that are upcycled from the garment industry. Saree is wrapped around a few coils at the top to finish-off these table baskets.

A sustainable fibre, Kaisa grows along the riverbanks in Bangladesh. When Kaisa dries, it changes colour from natural light green to a pale tan. It is widely used in Bangladesh but availability in Australia is limited.

The Fair Trade artisans bunch the Kaisa strands and coil the strand on top of each other to make the basket. As the coils are made, they are bound together with upcycled saree and wider Kasia strips.

The purchase of these baskets provides a sustainable and reliable source of income to support their families and communities. The artisans are from the northern region of Bangladesh - Rangpur.

These baskets are great as general storage.
